Bambi wins
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources can't prevail in a war of words/sentiment over an injured fawn and the nurse and police officer couple who rescued the animal.
It's Bambi vs. Godzilla. Bambi wins. Cloven hoofs down.
The story is also absurdist with abstract appeal on so many delicious levels: think the Nanny State is taking over? Then you're with Bambi and family. Love animals? Bambi. Question aurthority? Bambi. Plus there's just old-fashioned common sense -- why on earth would the DNR want to mess with a rural nurse and police officer who nursed back an injured fawn, then turned it free? If anything, the DNR should make the couple a poster child for wildlife rescue, or conservation of a fawn, or something.
But the DNR does not think that way. When they see/hear "deer," it's all about population control and what they call "harvest," which means deer kill. They have to deal with an out-of-control deer population that knows fewer natural predators (it was a coyote that mauled Bambi) and destroys crops. Plus they have to cope with the nut jobs in the People's Republic of Bloomington who want to create deer parks and provide free deer birth control, but only after forming a study committee that will naval gaze the issue for several years.
Anyhow, Bambi's maggot infested injury etc. is a heck of a story. Lotsa legs.
And you gotta love a situation that comes up with the charge: "illegal possession of a deer."

The DNR has failed to enforce the legislative ban on canned hunting, confined coyote dog "training" and confined deer breeding operations. Why do I here smell the admonition to "follow the money?"
