It's official: IUPUI apologizes to student reading book

Dateline: Tue 15 Jul 2008

You gotta love a headline like that. (IUPUI aplogizes to janitor scolded over KKK book," in Yahoo News and this morning's Star).

News broke Monday that IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz formally apologized to student/janitor Keith Sampson for reading a book about the Klan on campus.

Of course, Bantz sent the letter dated Friday only after the story was picked up by the Wall Street Journal and the university looked like a bunch of backwoods PC jackasses in national circles.

Bully to all the blogs that kept on this case, especially FIRE, which supports academic freedom, and the ICLU, which handled the case for Sampson.

The latter group's Ken Falk wrote this to IUPUI: "I am sure you see the absurdity of a university threatening an employee with discipline for reading a scholarly book that deals with the efforts of Notre Dame students in the 1920s to fight the KKK," he said.

The Star, better late than never, carried the AP wire story this morning, in the back of the metro/state section, where it has continually carried this news -- despite it becoming a national issue about freedom.
